Finding Kamienna Góra

Kamienna Góra is a hill in Gdynia, with its viewpoint above the city and port. Krzyż na Kamiennej Górze is about a 14-minute walk from Blick, a three-star hotel in Gdynia.

The hill has a layered history. The area once belonged to the village of Gdynia and, with it, was attached to the monastery in Kartuzy. During the Prussian partition, German settlers leased the hill, which received the name Steinberg in the early 19th century.

In 1920, Ryszard Gałczyński initiated the purchase of the land for the First Polish Sea Bathing Society, which planned a resort there. After the purchase, the hill was first called Kamieniec Pomorski. Villas appeared in the area during the 1920s and 1930s, including manor-style homes and later modernist buildings.

The viewpoint and the cross

The viewpoint and the cross

The summit square brings together the cross, a monument and views across Gdynia. A 25-metre cross was placed there in the 1990s, and the square also has a monument to the Defenders of the Coast of 1939.

From the viewpoint, the panorama takes in the city, the port and the Gulf of Gdańsk. The upper terrace park adds quiet paths, a summer amphitheatre and a viewing platform, so you can spend time among the greenery as well as at the summit square.

A practical guide to Gdynia centrum can help you connect the viewpoint with the central area.

Some buildings on the hill reflect its development between the wars. Examples include the 1920s villas „Henryka” at ul. Sędzickiego 8 and „Nasz domek” at ul. Sienkiewicza 5, alongside 1930s modernist buildings such as the former „Polskarob” company building at ul. Korzeniowskiego 8/10.

Access and the walk uphill

Access and the walk uphill

Stairs lead to the top of Kamienna Góra, or you can ride the free funicular from the area of the Gdynia Film Centre. The ride takes about 2 minutes and covers 96 metres, climbing 40 metres from the base of the hill.

The funicular has no intermediate stops; it arrives at the top beside the cross monument and observation deck. Its glass gondola carries 12 standing passengers, or 8 seated passengers when the seats are lowered. It is adapted for people with disabilities and is monitored.

The funicular operates year-round, but its published schedules differ: one gives daily hours of 10:00–20:00 and extended weekend hours from 1 June through 30 September, while another lists 10:00–20:00 on weekdays and 10:00–22:00 on weekends. Periodic inspections or difficult weather can also affect service. If you plan to ride, check the official site before you go.

Connecting the viewpoint with central Gdynia

Connecting the viewpoint with central Gdynia

Kamienna Góra works well as one stop in a walk that also takes in central Gdynia. The hill’s villas and modernist buildings give the surrounding streets a different feel from the open panorama at the top. A one-day walking route through central Gdynia can connect the viewpoint with other city sights.

Allow time for the summit square and the upper terrace paths, then choose stairs or the funicular for the uphill section. If you want to make the viewpoint part of a longer city walk, the central route offers a way to connect it with other parts of Gdynia without treating the hill as a standalone stop.
